Administrative history

The Western Arctic New Democratic Party was formed in 1971 as the Northwest Territories New Democratic Party. The purpose and objectives of the party were to develop and promote programs and a set of principles for the New Democratic Party consistent with the Federal Party program and suitable to the Northwest Territories; to organize the activities of the members of the New Democratic Party in the Northwest Territories and to fully involve women and aboriginal people in the operation and activities of the New Democratic Party in the Northwest Territories. In 1983, the citizens of the Northwest Territories supported a plebiscite on the division and formation of two autonomous territories within the Northwest Territories. At this time, the New Democratic Party of Canada created two separated provincial sections from the Northwest Territories based at the time on the federal riding division boundary. Wally Firth was the first New Democrat Party member to become a Member of Parliament. He was first elected in 1972 and again in 1974. There are no Territorial level parties represented in the Legislative Assembly.
