This fonds consists of approximately 61.6 cm of textual material and 17 reels of microfilm from the Central Registry filing system. Portions of the records were generated by the Highways Division of the Department of Public Works (30 block) and date between 1968-1978. The textual records consist of highway maintenance files, private access road files and minutes from the Northern Road Program. The remaining files, dated between 1972-1985, relate to the development and implementation of the Northern Preference Policy. There are also copies of minutes from the 1973 Highway Supervisors' Conference. The microfilm contains records from the design division, construction division, engineering division, operations and maintenance division, highways and marine operations, utilities and accommodation services.

This fonds consists of 28.5 cm of textual material including school attendance registers, year books and a copy of a school opening program. The attendance registers include a sampling of the Daily School Registers kept by Sir John Franklin High School between 1958 and 1967. These registers recorded student attendance, but also record a student's racial status, disc/treaty number and parent's names. The year books, entitled "Echo" include the folowing dates: 1972, 1992, 1994, 1995, 2001, 2003, 2005. The records also includes 'Voices of the Past, Visions for the Future: A Grand Opening Celebration', an official program dating from November 9, 2000. The event was used to mark the completion of the many upgrades and renovations made to the school.

This fonds includes records of the McMeekan family, including John "Jock" McMeekan, his wife Mildred (nee Hall) and niece Helene Acikahte (previously Giles, Henderson), dating from the 1930s to 1960, as well as an audio recording of Helene from 1985. The records consist of 5 reels of 8 mm film, 7 Umatic videocassettes copied from the films, 22 photographs, 3 DAT audiocassettes copied from the four original audiocassettes and 6 cm of textual records. These materials document their family and professional lives, including records relating to Jock's publishing and Mildred's teaching activities. The films probably date from 1939-1949, and feature family members, scenes of Yellowknife and environs and subjects such as treaty days, prospecting, and school events. The films were originally on 23 separate reels, however the Public Archives in Ottawa had the footage consolidated on five reels and copied onto 3/4 inch Umatic format videocassettes in 1986. The sound recordings consist of an interview with Helene (Giles) Henderson conducted by NWT Archivist David Rudkin on March 19, 1985 and Helene providing narration for the films. The 4 original cassettes were copied onto DAT cassettes in 1997 for preservation purposes and the audiocassettes are retained as original masters. The photographs show Jock McMeekan, Mildred Hall and other family members. The textual material consists of a typed early draft for a manuscript on the history of Yellowknife, a 325 page photocopied typewritten draft version of the book "Jock McMeekan's Yellowknife Blade", entitled "The Yellowknife Blade & other jottings" and a typed draft manuscript on material published in the newspaper "The Prospector", both written by Jock McMeekan.

This collection consists of copies of books, articles, maps, photographs and other materials, created by or about Father Emile Petitot. The material was accumulated by Donat Savoie in the 1970s during his employment with the federal Department of Indian and Northern Affairs. The materials include approximately 2 meters of textual records, over 150 photographs, 13 maps and other ephemera. The textual materials consist of photocopies of writings of Petitot and articles, notes and bibliographies on Petitot's works by other authors. There are copies of letters by Father Jean Sequin, who was at Fort Good Hope with Father Petitot, and Donat Savoie's notes on the Metis taken from Petitot's works. The photographs consist primarily of images of engravings and drawings by Petitot, and a few by other artists, depicting the Dene, Metis, Inuit, and their cultures. Many of the illustrations appear in Petitot's and Savoie's books. Also included are photographs of Petitot and the Fort Good Hope church. There are additional images of a 1975 plaque ceremony honouring Emile Petitot at Mareuil-les-Meaux, France and Anglican Church photographs collected by Savoie. The maps consist of copies of maps by Emile Petitot, 5 maps produced for Annexe 2 'Inventaire toponymique: Cartes geographiques d'Emile Petitot' of "L'Occupation territoriale chez les amerindiens du nord-ouest canadien au XIXe siecle selon Emile Petitot: Land Occupancy by the Amerindians of the Canadian Northwest in the 19th Century, according to Emile Petitot" by Rachelle Castonguay and another 4 maps related to volume two of that publication. The latter represent Petitot's interpretation of native land use and occupancy in the Athabasca-Mackenzie region up to the 1880s and illustrate: Indigenous toponymy; land occupancy; native activities and native groups in various areas. Additional materials in this collection include copies of birth certificates for Emile Petitot and members of his family and copies of newspaper clippings on Petitot.

This fonds consists of one 16 mm film entitled "Highway of the Atom," a copy of that film on Umatic videocassette, 3 VHS videocassettes of the productions entitled "To Move a Mountain" and "A Break in the Ice" and one photographs of a barge travelling the Mackenzie River. "Highway of the Atom" was created for the Northern Transportation Company (NTCL) in 1952 and illustrates the Radium Line of the NTCL transportation system by tracing the shipment of materials from Waterways, Alberta to Port Radium, on the "Radium Franklin" and the "Radium Gilbert." "To Move a Mountain," produced in 1969 and "A Break in the Ice," produced in 1972 are both promotional films that describe a typical transportation season.

This fonds consists of 217 colour slides taken by Dr. Norris Hunt in 1968-1969. The photographs include images from Tuktoyaktuk, Aklavik, Arctic Red River (Tsiigehtchic), Holman Island, Cape Parry, Inuvik and the surrounding area. There are photographs of the DEW Line site and geological features such as pingos. There are images of nurses and physicians, medical evacuations, facilities and hospital patients, including images of Dr. Hunt instructing students in a classroom setting. There are photographs of the ski team and cross country skiers in Inuvik. There are photographs depicting events at the Miss Ice Worm pageant. There are aerial images of the area and photographs of typical housing and utilidors in Inuvik. There are unidentified photographs of people from the communities.

This fonds consists of 619 colour transparencies, 36 b&w photographs and one colour photograph. Additionally, the NWT Archives created 340 digital files that were created from original 303 colour slides, 36 black and white photographs and one colour photograph that were initially loaned to the NWT Archives in 2005. The majority of the images depict the community of Aklavik and include images of the All Saints Anglican Mission and Church, All Saints Hospital, Royal Canadian Mountain Police buildings and boat "Aklavik", as well as aircraft, the Anglican school, Aklavik Post Office and many identified people from the community. Many of the images are of patients at the All Saints Hospital. There are also images of Inuvik that include buildings in the community such as the Federal School and Roman Catholic church, the hospital, Semler's store, and Mackenzie Hotel, as well as the unveiling of the Inuvik Monument by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker. In addition, there are images of Fort Good Hope, Lutselk'e (Snowdrift), Detah (Dettah), Bathurst Inlet, Tuktoyaktuk, Fort Reliance, Fort Rae, Herschel Island, and Reindeer Station. The images taken in 1970's and 1980's are of Yellowknife and include images of the July 1 parade, art work at the Yellowknife Gallery, Yellowknife City Hall, exhibits at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, Northern United Place, Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company (Con Mine), and Giant Mine.

This fonds consists of two audiocassette tapes, one sound CD, approximately 943 colour negatives, two 8 mm videocassettes, approximately 50 cm of textual material and one site plan generated or collected by the NWT Mining Heritage Society between 2000-2002. The audiocassettes and sound CD contain interviews with former employees of Giant Mine including Bill Case, Al Hall, Joe Malmsten, Jim McKay, George Dundas, Frank Horvat, Lorne Wrigglesworth, Tom Natyshen, Bill Hall, Sam Bitner, Dan Edjericon, J.C. Brien, Lew Whalen, Walter Dwyer, Mark Eveson, Francois H. Maille and Dave Nickerson. The interviews were coordinated and conducted by Bill Case, Walt Humphries and Brian Weir. The 943 images document the interior and exterior of buildings at Giant Mine, as well as show mining equipment and machinery. The videocassettes also document the interior and exterior of buildings, the Giant Mine site and machinery and equipment. The textual material includes agendas and minutes of meetings of the Giant Mine Heritage Working Group (now known as the NWT Mining Heritage Society), the final report on the assessment of Giant Mine, as well as correspondence and information related to the development of a mining museum at the Giant Mine site. In addition, there is a site plan showing Giant Mine buildings and locations.

This fonds contains records gathered by John U. Bayly in his role as Inquiry Counsel for the Bourassa Inquiry. The Inquiry was conducted by Madam Justice Carole Conrad of Alberta and held in Yellowknife. The proceedings began on March 26, 1990 and ended with Madam Conrad's findings issued on September 28, 1990. The records consist of copies of preliminary proceedings, transcripts of the hearings, exhibits including one videocassette and one audio cassette of the press conference and public meeting held by GNWT Justice Minister Michael Ballantyne on Dec. 21, 1989. In addition, there are files containing submissions, letters of complaint, authorities, the inquiry findings and press clippings.

This fonds consists of approximately 54,000 black and white negatives, postcards and prints, and one file of text that encompasses Hans Heinrich Maximilian (Henry) Busse's professional photographic work.

7909 images have been given full item description. Of these, the stock file consists of 4909 images that Busse may have considered important or saleable and these were arranged alphabetically by subject by the Museum of the North. Images in the stock file feature a wide range of subjects including animals, boats, bush pilots, aircraft, Dene, Inuit, and mining operations. There are also images of Coppermine (Kugluktuk), Cambridge Bay, Port Radium, Eskimo Point (Arviat), Fort Rae (Behchoko), Lac la Martre (Whati), Hay River, Fort Smith, Fort Resolution, Fort Reliance, Yellowknife and Aklavik. Another 3000 images have been selected from the entire collection and given full item description. Additional subject matter includes Yellowknife social events, weddings, sports teams and games, church activities, Yellowknife businesses, and school events. The remainder of the photographic material is as Busse left it, as photo order envelopes. These images have been rehoused, noting any information on the original envelope, and describing the number and content of the images. A large proportion of these images are studio portraits of Yellowknife residents.

The textual material consists mainly of correspondence from Busse's customers found in the photo order envelopes, as well as three certificates for photograph contest awards from 1958-1960.

An additional accession provided by an anonymous donor contains 42 prints and postcards of Aboriginal people, mostly from the Eastern Arctic.

Some photographs may be the work of Busse's business partner, Gerhard (Gerry) Reimann, or of other studio assistants.

This fonds consists of 1.3 m of textual records from the Legal Services Board and its regional legal services committees and contractors.

Records from the Board of Directors include minutes, agendas and meeting materials from meetings of the Board.

Records from the NWT Native Courtworkers’ Association/Mackenzie Court Workers’ Services include minutes and other materials from annual general meetings, executive committee meetings, and board of directors meetings, as well as reports on reviews of the association. Also included are some statistics and reports on legal services applications received, and legal services provided.

Records from the Arctic Public Legal Education and Information Society include annual reports and financial statements.

This fonds consists of 20 cm of textual records and173 b&w photographs, prepared for the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys during 1960 to 1963. The reports include 'Settlement files' and 'Terrain and Site Analysis' on 19 separate settlements in the Canadian north, most in the Northwest Territories, but also one in the Yukon. The reports include black and white photographs illustrating buildings and physical setting. The Settlement files provide information under the headings of: location, structure, function and facilities, communications, population, resources, origin and history, toponymy, physical setting, climate, permafrost, freeze-up and break-up. The Terrain and Site Analysis reports provide information regarding location, geology, landforms, terrain conditions, soil, drainage, permafrost, vegetation, harbour and shore conditions, weather conditions, water supply, sewage and garbage disposal, sanitation, aircraft landing facilities, locations of buildings and roads, local labour, and fire safety. The fonds also includes a reference plan of Yellowknife settlement, revised up to 1958.

This fonds consists of two maps, 465 photographs, 43 DAT audiocassettes and 17 audio reels. The majority of the material consists of a collection of oral histories and photographs accumulated by the Fort Good Hope Community Council via their Dene Language and Historical Research Project. The oral histories were created because of the Dene Language and Historical Research Program. The photographs, collected from individual photographers, represent an artificial collection of historical photographs. Photographers include: Mr. Cassien Edgi, Brother Mahe and Alphonsine McNeely. The maps consist of town plans dealing with land use and development in the municipality of Fort Good Hope. One plan contains the text of the Fort Good Hope Community Plan. The second plan indicates zoning and focuses on the Jackfish Creek Redevelopment.

This fonds consists of approximately 1.15 m of textual material, 60 maps, 3 architectural plans and 84 photographs generated by the Local Trustee Board, Municipal District of Yellowknife, Town of Yellowknife, and the City of Yellowknife between 1940 and 2005.

The textual materials, which date from 1940 to 2005, include Local Trustee Board/City Council meeting minutes, correspondence files, Centennial Committee records, licenses, Yellowknife Board of Trade records, and by-laws. Subject files also include road construction, hospital construction, health and welfare, taxes, elections, federal funding, lot development, budgets, infrastructure development and the construction of housing. There are records from the Town's Planning Committee including budget information, utility franchise information, and records relating to town planning and zoning. A select number of municipal financial statements can also be found within this fonds.

This fonds also contains a select number of reports commissioned by the city and presented to council on issues such as the Yellowknife School District and water and sewage systems. Also included are reports delivered by the City of Yellowknife Heritage Committee, a committee funded directly by the City of Yellowknife. These records include "Policy for the Preservation and Development of Yellowknife's Heritage Resources," prepared by the Yellowknife Heritage Committee (1986), and a copy of the pamphlet entitled "Four Walking Tours of Yellowknife Old Town" (1987). As well, there are several reports authored between 2001-2005 documenting abandoned or demolished Yellowknife buildings as well as an inventory of New Town Historical Buildings.

The cartographic materials consist of maps of Yellowknife, development plans for Frame Lake and the capital site, street lighting plans, plans for water and sewage services, and zoning plans.

There are also architectural plans documenting the renovation of City Hall in 1969.

The graphic content, dating from 1920-1973, depicts meetings of the Municipal Council, municipal buildings, houses and businesses in the town. Buildings depicted include the Gerry Murphy Arena, the Municipal Town Hall, City Hall, the Bellanca Building, St. Patrick's High School, William McDonald High School and Mildred Hall Elementary School. Several photographs feature airplanes operated in Yellowknife by local transportation companies. There are also photographs taken during a dinner attended by Commissioner Stuart Hodgson and Bishop Henry Cook to mark the unveiling of Pilot’s Monument in Yellowknife.

This fonds includes records of the Metis Nation (formerly the Metis Association of the NWT) for the period 1974-2000. The records include 980.7 cm, 11 8" floppy disks, and 58 3½" floppy disks of textual records, 9 maps, and 24 photographs of processed records relating to the Metis Association and Metis Nation. The records are divided into six series: Governance, Locals, Chronos, Administration, Membership/Enumeration, and Projects.

Yet to be processed: There are 4500 photographs of Metis Nation staff and events in colour print, b/w print, colour slide and negative formats. Many of the photographs are b/w prints stamped as being from archival institutions, such as the National Archives. Audio recordings include 1800 audio cassettes of oral histories and recordings of the annual general assemblies. Videos include 200 VHS and Umatic format videocassettes with footage of annual general assembly as well as videos produced for the Metis Nation.

This fonds consists of recordings of the various sessions of the 13th annual conference of the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women. The original recordings are on 32 audio cassettes which have been copied to DAT audio tape.

This fonds consists of approximately 4 cm of textual material produced by the Status of Women Committee and the ad hoc committee. The materials include: minutes of meetings; correspondence; copies of department submissions; recommendations of ad hoc committee members; a copy of the Plan of Action report and the response of the Executive; and materials from the "Breaking New Ground" Conference.

This fonds consists of 6 cm of textual material including: correspondence and minutes of the Northwest Territories Status of Women Action Committee; newsletters; reports and news clippings from the 1973 Northwest Territories Status of Women Conference; reports and minutes concerning the 1975 Yellowknife Women's Festival; poster orders; and reports on progress made and issues of interest.

This fonds consists of textual material from the Office of the Language Commissioner. The material includes five copies of the brochure "The Languages of Our Land" which contains basic information about the purpose and content of the NWT Official Languages Act. The brochures are in the languages of English, French, Cree, Tlicho (Dogrib), Chipewyan, Gwich'in, North Slavey, South Slavey, Inuinnaqtun and Inuvialuktun. In addition there is a copy of the report "The Richness that Language and Culture Brings" which is an Impact Study of Canada-NWT Languages Agreements (1984-1996) and the Aboriginal Languages Directory (2012) and its accompanying References and Citations Companion.
