Many of the images are of federal building projects that were undertaken in approximately 25 communities within the Northwest Territories. The photographs document construction of buildings during a period in which responsibilities for communities shifted from federal to territorial jurisdiction. Also included are portraits, images of Hudson's Bay Company buildings, Royal Canadian Mounted Police posts, Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line sites, churches and missions, scenery and wildflowers throughout the north and aerial photographs of the communities, including some in the Yukon and northern Quebec.

Records include prints formerly owned by Ethel Coates, documenting her experience living and working in Norman Wells. The photographs feature the portraits and daily work and recreation activities of Imperial Oil Ltd employees, including hiking, camping, and dances. Most of the images appear to have been taken in and around Norman Wells and Camp Canol, but it is possible that some were taken elsewhere.

Photographs 0052 through 0102 are arranged according to their order in a scrapbook that was created for Ethel Coates' memorial service, with captions written by her niece.

The images document Fred North's time in Inuvik (1957-1963 as principal of Sir Alexander Mackenzie School; 1965-1966 either as vice-principal of the new school or back at SAMS; 1967-1973 at one of the schools, probably as principal), Fort Simpson (1963-1965 as school principal) and Yellowknife (1973-1979 - spent one or two years as school principal in Lac la Martre / Whatı̀. Then he served as Superintendent of School Services-Operations ordering furnishings and supplies for all NWT schools). The images show schools, students, teachers, and classrooms, as well as northern events like carnivals, royal visits, and Northern Games. There are also images of various communities and the buildings within them.

The film features the [196? and 1967] Inuvik Muskrat Jamboree, aerial views of Inuvik, various buildings in the townsite, airplanes and the Inuvik airport, and extensive footage of drum dancers in traditional costumes. The photographs document the construction of a road and pipeline from Norman Wells through the Mackenzie Mountains to the Yukon, commonly referred to as the Canol Project, between 1942 and 1943. Many of the photographs include road construction, bridge building, earth moving, graders, Caterpillar tractors, dump trucks and other heavy equipment operated by construction workers and soldiers, some of whom were African American. Some of the images depict dogs being used to transport supplies, whether by dogsled or by using saddlebags. The films document being on the land, prospecting, and hunting between 1930 and 1960, and town and family life between 1950 and 1970. Subjects include Yellowknife, the ferry crossing at Fort Providence on the Mackenzie River (Dehcho), Pine Point Lake, footage of wildlife (such as bison) taken from airplanes and helicopters, the Duke of Edinburgh in Yellowknife, the Radium (King?), life at the Canol camp, and four short films entitled ‘Northern Urbanization’ which relate to Yellowknife and the surrounding area.
