This accession consists of a film entitled "Prohibition in the North," a coproduction of the Government of the Northwest Territories' Department of Information and ACCESS. Directed by Peter Crass, the film outlines different systems of liquor control (prohibition, rationing and local control) in four different communities.

The photographs document the construction of a road and pipeline from Norman Wells through the Mackenzie Mountains to the Yukon, commonly referred to as the Canol Project, between 1942 and 1943. Many of the photographs include road construction, bridge building, earth moving, graders, Caterpillar tractors, dump trucks and other heavy equipment operated by construction workers and soldiers, some of whom were African American. Some of the images depict dogs being used to transport supplies, whether by dogsled or by using saddlebags. The films document being on the land, prospecting, and hunting between 1930 and 1960, and town and family life between 1950 and 1970. Subjects include Yellowknife, the ferry crossing at Fort Providence on the Mackenzie River (Dehcho), Pine Point Lake, footage of wildlife (such as bison) taken from airplanes and helicopters, the Duke of Edinburgh in Yellowknife, the Radium (King?), life at the Canol camp, and four short films entitled ‘Northern Urbanization’ which relate to Yellowknife and the surrounding area.

The black and white photographs date to the late 1930s and early 1940s and depict buildings and activities in Yellowknife and at the Con, Giant, and Ptarmigan mine sites. The colour photographs were taken in Yellowknife during a reunion trip in the 1980s and feature buildings in the Yellowknife area.

The majority of the photographs document Sam’s life prospecting, mining, and trapping between 1930 and 1950. There are three main series of photographs: work in the Great Bear Lake region with the Northern Transportation Company and uranium mines in the early 1930s; gold mining, camping, and prospecting in the Great Slave Lake area in the late 1930s through the 1940s; and trapping on the barren lands (tundra) of the Keewatin region near Clinton-Colden Lake and the Back river area in the late 1930s to 1950. There are many images of camps and campsites, as well as airplanes, dogsledding, mines, hunting, and trapping. Also included are images of shipbuilding in Fort Smith in the 1930s, as well as Sam’s nuclear family life, 1952-1960. Communities documented include early Yellowknife’s Old Town and Latham Island, Fort Franklin (Deline), Cameron Bay camps, Fort Resolution, and Fort Smith.

The records were collected by the Office of the Commissioner after the community was abandoned. The records include settlement manager monthly reports and correspondence, settlement council minutes, school records (including enrollment and attendance and student files), financial records (including aircraft tender documents, operations funding, cheque books and banking records, and ledgers), fishery plant records, building and public works records, health and welfare records,employment records, and a guestbook. Subjects include the Eldorado Mine at Echo Bay on Great Bear Lake, Hudson's Bay Company posts along the Mackenzie River and marine transportation. Types of boats depicted include scows, sternwheelers, barges and tugboats. There are photographs of the "S.S. Distributor", "S.S. Midnight Sun", "Great Bear", "M.V. Nechemus", "S.S. Northland Trader" and the "Silver Queen". The accession also includes six copy negatives of images taken by C.W. Mathers, a professional photographer from Edmonton who toured communities along the Mackenzie River in 1901. Locations include the Eldorado Mine site, Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company (Con Mine) mine site at Yellowknife, Athabasca Landing, Fort Franklin, Fort Norman, Fort McPherson, Fort Resolution, Fort Simpson and Fort Smith.

The prints were originally housed in three photo albums. The photographs were taken during the construction and inspection of the road from the Alberta boundary to Hay River, one leg of the Mackenzie Highway. Road crews are featured using Jeeps, dump trucks, graders, bulldozers, cranes, and other heavy equipment to survey, crush gravel, remove timber, clear muskeg, build bridges, and dig post holes. Other subjects include periodic flooding and evidence of flood damage at Hay River, and shipping ports and vessels, including the Radium Charles. The title pages of albums #1 and #3 contain the title "Grimshaw -Great Slave Lake Road." The photographs in albums #1 and #2 appear to have been taken by F.C. Haven. Album #1 contains images :0001 to :0309 which were taken between May 1946 and June 1947. Album #2 contains images :0310 to :0661 which were taken between July 1947 and June 1948. Album #3 contains images :0662 to :0974 were taken between August 1946 and November 1947; these images were apparently taken by C.R. Cornish, Inspecting Engineer.
