This fonds contains records gathered by John U. Bayly in his role as Inquiry Counsel for the Bourassa Inquiry. The Inquiry was conducted by Madam Justice Carole Conrad of Alberta and held in Yellowknife. The proceedings began on March 26, 1990 and ended with Madam Conrad's findings issued on September 28, 1990. The records consist of copies of preliminary proceedings, transcripts of the hearings, exhibits including one videocassette and one audio cassette of the press conference and public meeting held by GNWT Justice Minister Michael Ballantyne on Dec. 21, 1989. In addition, there are files containing submissions, letters of complaint, authorities, the inquiry findings and press clippings.

Bourassa Inquiry Exhibits. - 1989-1990. - 14 cm. (10 folders 3-7 to 4-4), 1 videocassette, 1 audio cassette. The exhibits also include a videocassette [item # :0001], an audiocassette recording [item # :0002] and transcripts of a Dec. 21, 1989 press conference and following public meeting held by Justice Minister Michael Ballantyne.

This fonds consists of 391 colour slides taken by Dr. Sylvester Drabitt, 150 colour negatives that were copied from slides loaned to the NWT Archives by the donor, one videocassette and one audio cassette. Dr. Drabbit was a physician who traveled on medical trips in the eastern arctic. The images include views of people, scenery, flora, fauna, people living on the land, snow houses, medical staff and facilities, transportation methods such as dog teams and aircraft, living conditions, and images from a medical patrol on the ship, C.D. Howe. The videotape also contains scenes from the C.D. Howe and the audio cassette is entitled "Victory at Sea-Last Patrol of the C.D. Howe.

The film is entitled "Dene Nation." The sound recordings document dance and music from "Our Land, Our Life" comprised of recordings from Fort Good Hope of drum music, Dene songs and North Slavey (Hareskin) language; as well as audio from slide shows and films, including "My Country My People," "I Was Born Here" and "Dene Nation." The sound recordings from Fort Good Hope, likely recorded in 1957, feature members of the Pierrot, Kakfwi, Remi, Edgi, Masuzumi, Lafferty, Cotchilly, Taureau, Emmanuel, and Kelly families.

The films are entitled "Dene Nation" and "I Was Born Here." "Dene Nation" was directed in 1979 by Rene Fumoleau, and "I Was Born Here" was produced in 1976 by Rene Fumoleau.

The three film reels are of "I Was Born Here;" "I Was Born Here French version" (also known as 'Mon pays est ma vie'), and "Dene Nation" (First Answer Print). The BetaCam videocassette and DVCam videocassette are copies of "Mon pays est ma vie." René Fumoleau produced the 1976 film, I Was Born Here (Mon pays est ma vie, 1977) and directed Dene Nation in 1979. "Dene Nation" was produced by the Dene Nation.

This fonds consists of 583 photographs, most of which depict images of the Kraus' daily activities and the visits of local residents and many travelers to their home, and a 16mm colour film. The pictures are from the Nahanni area and include views of the Kraus' residences at Kraus Hot Springs (now in Nahanni National Park) and Little Doctor Lake. There are also photographs of Darrell Pfeiffer sculpting busts of Gus and Mary Kraus.
The 16mm film, which is the original master and the Betacam copy, the archival master, depict pesonalities from the Nahanni Butte/Fort Simpson area in the early 1960s, including Gus and Mary Kraus, their son Mickey Kraus, Dick Turner, Father Posset and Albert Faille.

The silent film is entitled "Nahanni Butte" and is 22 minutes in length, and is believed to have been taken by Gus Kraus. The film depicts pesonalities from the Nahanni Butte/Fort Simpson area in the early 1960s, including Gus and Mary Kraus, their son Mickey Kraus, Dick Turner, Father Posset and Albert Faille.

The textual records consist of correspondence from Father Brown (Bern Will Brown) to George Rysgaard as well as correspondence with Dr. Breckenridge, concerning the 1970 trip to the Thelon River area. The correspondence includes lists of mammals and birds observed, and plant specimens collected. The photographs depict several locations including Great Bear Lake, Colville Lake, Victoria Island and the Thelon Refuge. There are also images of Duncan Pryde, Father Bern Will Brown, and George Rysgaard. The films are about the following subjects: the topography, flora and fauna of the Thelon River area, Colville Lake and Victoria Island. The sound recordings consist of narration for the Colville Lake and Victoria Island films.

This fonds consists of 14 audio cassettes and 2 VHS videocassettes containing interviews with elders that resulted from the Snare Lake Education Committee's efforts to gather information for a handbook on cultural programming for use in the school. The elders interviewed during February 1992 were: Harry Kodzin, Margaret Lafferty, Marie Simpson, Jimmy Kodzin, Rosa Fish, Celine Wanazah, Rosa Pea'a, Alexis Arrowmaker, Madeline Judas, Louis Whane, Joe Pea'a, Roger Arrowmaker, Leonard Fish, Charlie Eyakfwo and Joe Dryneck. Activities and topics discussed include: Easter in the past, survival in the bush, making camp, Tlicho (Dogrib) food preparation, Tlicho (Dogrib) social life and customs, hunting and butchering caribou, traditional tools and constructing a drum. Some interviews with John Pea'a on cultural inclusion and religious instruction were conducted in 1989 and collected for this project.

Records include oral history interviews that resulted from the Snare Lake Education Committee's efforts to gather information from local elders for a handbook on cultural programming for use in the school. Interviews are in Tlicho (Dogrib).
