This fonds consists of approximately 56.27 meters of textual records, 1,600 colour and black and white photographs, 26 audio recordings and 18 videos. The photographs depict medical facilities, medical personnel, procedures and health education activities. The audio materials are primarily related to health education, health studies and reports on healthcare in the north. The videos are primarily health promotion video related to nutrition and diet.

The textual material is derived from the various iterations of the divisions responsible for policy, planning and reporting; directorate and finance support activities, population health issues; community health issues; board support services, child protection and family services. The records cover issues such as legislative initiatives, departmental organization and strategic planning, the Territorial Hospital Insurance Service, the transfer of health services to the GNWT from the Federal Government, the decentralization of health services to the communities, health and social services matters in self-government negotiations, and significant reports including the Cuff Report (It's Time to Act), the NWT Health Report, NWT Health Status Report and Ambulance Services Report. The records include files related to the management of the department including: Senior Management Chronos, Executive Committee files, records from the Recruitment and Retention Committee, the Joint Senior Management Committee and Senior Management Committee files.

The textual material also includes correspondence with regional health authorities and boards, program development and delivery records, reports and promotional materials. These records cover programs such as Brighter Futures, Community Action Fund, Social Agenda Community Demonstration Projects, Traditional Knowledge, Community Wellness, nutrition, promoting nursing in the NWT, midwifery, clinical standards of practice, and many programs directed towards promoting healthy lifestyles. Included within these materials are records from various committees such as: the Community Wellness Committee, the Aboriginal Wellness Coalition, the Committee on Nursing Education, the Northwest Territories Pregnancy Risk Score Steering Committee, the NWT Clinical Practice Committee, The NWT Advisory Committee on Immunization, the Antimicrobial Steering Committee, the NWT Maternal and Perinatal Committee, the Childhood Fatality Review Committee, the Mental Health Task Team, Joint Standing Committee-Independent Seniors, the Addictions and Mental Health Committee, and the Traditional Knowledge Working Group.

This accession consists of files from many different GNWT departments, including Education, Social Services (and predecessors), and Local Government, relating to the operation, administration, and closure of the community of Port Burwell. The records were collected by the Office of the Commissioner after the community was abandoned. The records include settlement manager monthly reports and correspondence, settlement council minutes, school records (including enrollment and attendance and student files), financial records (including aircraft tender documents, operations funding, cheque books and banking records, and ledgers), fishery plant records, building and public works records, health and welfare records,employment records, and a guestbook. This accession consists of a large extent of unprocessed audio-visual material, depicting primarily Federal health services across the Northwest Territories from the 1960s to the 1980s. These include slide presentations about a 50th anniversary celebration of the St. Theresa’s Hospital in Chesterfield Inlet, a presentation on nursing in the north and a presentation on the services provided by the Department of Health, which is also accompanied by audio presentations in four indigenous languages. As well, there is a large extent of photographs, audio recordings, and video.

Records consist of contribution administration files related to wellness promotion, primarily under the following federally-funded programs: Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative (ADI), Brighter Futures, First Nations and Inuit Home and Community Care, National Aboriginal Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy (NAYSPS), and National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program (NNADAP).

Records include an Inuktitut version of a Handbook for Interpreters in Health. The handbook is geared towards medical interpreters and health care workers and contains information for interpreters to assist them in communicating with patients on health related issues.

Records include an annual report, legislation files, and self-government files. The annual report is from the Fort Smith Health and Social Services Authority. The legislation files include details regarding the drug interchangeability formulary, grandfathering under the Social Workers Act, and a discussion paper related to the Health and Social Services Professions Act. The self-government files document the role of the Department of Health and Social Services in self-government negotiations, including but not limited to presentations given by the department during self-government discussions, and actions taken by the department related to implementation of the Tlicho Final Agreement.

This fonds consists of 391 colour slides taken by Dr. Sylvester Drabitt, 150 colour negatives that were copied from slides loaned to the NWT Archives by the donor, one videocassette and one audio cassette. Dr. Drabbit was a physician who traveled on medical trips in the eastern arctic. The images include views of people, scenery, flora, fauna, people living on the land, snow houses, medical staff and facilities, transportation methods such as dog teams and aircraft, living conditions, and images from a medical patrol on the ship, C.D. Howe. The videotape also contains scenes from the C.D. Howe and the audio cassette is entitled "Victory at Sea-Last Patrol of the C.D. Howe.

This fonds consists of 217 colour slides taken by Dr. Norris Hunt in 1968-1969. The photographs include images from Tuktoyaktuk, Aklavik, Arctic Red River (Tsiigehtchic), Holman Island, Cape Parry, Inuvik and the surrounding area. There are photographs of the DEW Line site and geological features such as pingos. There are images of nurses and physicians, medical evacuations, facilities and hospital patients, including images of Dr. Hunt instructing students in a classroom setting. There are photographs of the ski team and cross country skiers in Inuvik. There are photographs depicting events at the Miss Ice Worm pageant. There are aerial images of the area and photographs of typical housing and utilidors in Inuvik. There are unidentified photographs of people from the communities.

This fonds consists of 619 colour transparencies, 36 b&w photographs and one colour photograph. Additionally, the NWT Archives created 340 digital files that were created from original 303 colour slides, 36 black and white photographs and one colour photograph that were initially loaned to the NWT Archives in 2005. The majority of the images depict the community of Aklavik and include images of the All Saints Anglican Mission and Church, All Saints Hospital, Royal Canadian Mountain Police buildings and boat "Aklavik", as well as aircraft, the Anglican school, Aklavik Post Office and many identified people from the community. Many of the images are of patients at the All Saints Hospital. There are also images of Inuvik that include buildings in the community such as the Federal School and Roman Catholic church, the hospital, Semler's store, and Mackenzie Hotel, as well as the unveiling of the Inuvik Monument by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker. In addition, there are images of Fort Good Hope, Lutselk'e (Snowdrift), Detah (Dettah), Bathurst Inlet, Tuktoyaktuk, Fort Reliance, Fort Rae, Herschel Island, and Reindeer Station. The images taken in 1970's and 1980's are of Yellowknife and include images of the July 1 parade, art work at the Yellowknife Gallery, Yellowknife City Hall, exhibits at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, Northern United Place, Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company (Con Mine), and Giant Mine.
