Franklin Probe [Beechey Island cairns, August 1978, close-up of plaque:
From far shores over thousands of years from East and West they came, newcomers each in their own time, to this new world.
None were more daring than those intrepid adventurers whose journeys of discovery pushed back the edges of the known world.
Into unknown polar regions they ventured, officers and men enduring terrible hardships, in search for the Northwest Passage or in heroic attempts to reach the North Pole.
Many never returned.
To commemorate the achievements of those gallant men in their service to country and mankind, this cairn is dedicated by and under the authority of
Stuart M. Hodgson Commissioner of the Northwest Territories
Robert S. Pilot
Douglas L. Matthews]
